How to Safely Clean and Disinfect Your Dumpster Diving Finds

Uncovering great merchandise or household items is only half the job—making sure they are completely sanitized and safe for use or resale is the most important step. Whether you salvaged electronics, clothing, or household goods, having a proper cleaning routine ensures your finds are fresh and ready.

Here is a step-by-step guide to cleaning and disinfecting your salvaged items safely:

1. Establish a Dedicated Cleaning Station

Never bring uncleaned items directly into your living room or kitchen. Set up a designated sorting and cleaning area in your garage, yard, or balcony with heavy-duty trash bags and rubber gloves ready.

2. Hard Goods & Plastic Items (Lysol, Disinfectant Wipes, & Soap)

For plastic toys, storage bins, tools, or sealed decor, wipe off any dust or debris first. Then, thoroughly spray them with a disinfectant spray or wipe them down with bleach-free wipes. Allow them to air-dry completely.

3. Clothing & Fabrics (Hot Water & Disinfectant Wash)

Always wash salvaged clothes, plush toys, or backpacks immediately. Use the hottest water setting safe for the fabric, along with a heavy-duty laundry detergent and a laundry sanitizer (such as Lysol Laundry Sanitizer).

4. Electronics & Tech Gear (Isopropyl Alcohol 70%+)

Water and electronics don't mix! To sanitize headphones, gadgets, or chargers, use a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher). It kills germs rapidly without damaging delicate circuit boards.

5. Sealed Food & Grocery Products

If you salvage factory-sealed canned or bottled goods, inspect the seals carefully. Wash the exterior packaging or cans with warm soapy water before opening or storing them in your pantry.

6. Odor Removal (Baking Soda & Sunshine)

If an item has a musty smell, sprinkle baking soda over it and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming. Leaving items in direct sunlight for an afternoon also works wonders for removing odors and naturally killing bacteria.

Pro-Tip:

When in doubt, safety comes first. If an item cannot be properly sanitized or shows signs of mold, it's best to leave it behind or discard it responsibly.
